What is Hive Projects?
Hive Projects was established as a production label by artist and music producer Robbie Rowlands in early 2005 to embody an ever growing collective of artists from various backgrounds and genres, that he is involved with. Having finally completed the construction of Beehive recording studio, he felt that his artists needed a conceptual, as well as physical, home-base.
While some artists associated with Hive Projects are signed to major labels, others are on independent labels or are unsigned. Independent artists in the Hive have access to national distribution through MGM. In this way, artists are encouraged to retain their independence, drawing what resources they need from the Hive.
Rather than play a traditional producer role, Robbie takes a less conventional approach with many of his proteges, emphasising self-determination in the development and recording processes. He encourages bands to be involved in as much of the recording as possible, providing his skills and resources where necessary. As well as producer and engineer, he has been known to wear the hat of mentor, agent, manager, stylist, etc, with a view to putting the artist in a position to be more autonomous.
